Apache Derby JDBC driver
Did IBM "forget" to open source the Cloudscape JDBC driver when open sourcing the Java database at Apache? There's only an embedded driver available on the Apache Web Site...
... and a "Universal Driver" on IBM's web site.

You need to dig around on the IBM BD2 site fo thr Universal Driver.

To my point - the JDBC driver was not open sourced. It's a little like Open Sourcing Star Office, only not the file format... I guess I need to read the IBM DB2 Universal License.
Good luck on your new job Jonathan!
