NetBeans 4.0 beta is out!
I've already been blogging about NetBeans and its versions to come. Have a look at the first Beta of NetBeans 4.0 for yourself right here: http://www.netbeans.org/community/releases/40/index.html
... and let's just track when Eclipse catches up with Tiger support.

1.5 for eclipse and its old

Posted by not important right now on août 23, 2004 at 11:27 AM CEST #

Alexis, Eclipse has had support for 1.5 for a while. The only thing missing is annotations, all the rest works really well (I even wrote a plug-in for Generics). I hear that NetBeans is entirely based on ant right now, do you know if this is going to be fixed for the final version? An IDE needs incremental compilation to be useful, hope it's just a temporary oversight from the NetBeans steam.

Well Cedric, I was refering to Eclipse having out of the box full support for Tiger.

I believe the hard part in Eclipse is to look for and deal with the extensive number of plugins available (all having very different levels of quality and features).

Saying Eclipse supports Tiger is like saying NetBeans supported refactoring before 4.0. Some things just have to be part of the "core" of the IDE.

Not sure what you mean, JDK 1.5 support is part of the core in Eclipse. It used to be separate but is now fully part of 3.0 and 3.1. In other words: download the current builds of Eclipse 3.0 and 3.1 and you'll see that Tiger is supported.

I will pick up the latest 3.1 stable build (over 80megs !) and will give it a try.

I realize I didn't answer the incremental compile question. Maybe you can elaborate on what you expect from such a feature.
I don't belive this is a must-have to build project incrementaly. ANT does a pretty good job at recompiling only the files which it needs to. It does it pretty fast too. The NetBeans team uses this on its pretty large code base. But again, you may have different needs.

PS: congrats on your new job!
