More about βloglines

It's been more than a week and overall I really like to new bloglines.com.

•  I miss the smooth scrolling between posts (when using keyboard navigation)
•  Keep pressing 'j' and you'll move to the next category/folder: good
•  The number of unread entries is No longer in the HTML title page.
•  No feedback to user in right window when clicking on feed (is data loading?)
•  The Quick view on multiple folder looks good but it's not convenient as it shows a fixed list of entries (both read and unread) for each folder.
•  Nice "pin" feature (appeared yesterday?). I've always found it odd to mark things as "not read" when actually I simply wanted to come back to it for further work.

Bloglines beta

So this is what the bloglines folks were up to. As always, SaaS' success is also a matter of keeping customers happy with small but regular updates.

The 3-pane view looks pretty nice and the quick view works nicely with multiple feeds and will avoid me having to select which feeds need to show headers only (vs. entire posts). The keyboard navigation ("j" and "k") is still very convenient and the small animations are a nice addition.

I'm not sure about having to explicitly mark as read. I'd also like to be able to have preferences as to what the default view (quick, full or 3-pane) is for each feed or folder. I don't think I'll use the personalized homepage.

Way too many false new syndication posts

I've felt behind on reading most of my syndication feeds and the bad news is that I get tons of old news in the mast month or so that show up as new content in my reader. Some are new because the content actually changed (no "diff" in bloglines.com, if Google's reader does that, I'll probably move over), but for the vast majority I don't see why they show up as new and it's pretty annoying. I think to recall it only happened once to blogs.sun.com on a major software upgrade.

This is going to kill syndication or certainly slow down those trying to use this for business apps (one and only one delivery isn't quite there). Does Atom help in any way?

Mashing it up with jMaki lab

As a follow-up to my previous post on using jMaki to display Roller-generated JSON content, I would recommend reading this lab presentation.

It has explanations on how to configure the XMLHttpProxy (using the /resources/xhp.json file) and configure web.xml for proxies to bypass the limitations in my post. Also, it doesn't use Roller-generated JSON but rather an elegant XSL tranformation to move from RSS to JSON. Note Yahoo pipes can generate JSON. Try with Arun's GlassFish aggregation pipe.

More jMaki presentations from the jMaki day are available here. Check out also this value proposition link (sounds new to me).
