Why Mozilla is droping Thunderbird?

I don't know what you guys think about this, whether you think it is a big issue or not. It is for me, actually. The problem itself is important: Thunderbird is a very important tool for millions of people (including me), and that lack of interest on maintaining it is quite worrisome.

However that isn't the biggest problem for me. It's the politics and big interest behind that decision. Even if Thunderbird is a great application, we could come up with another one if something goes terribly wrong with it. So, the real question here is, why the Mozilla Foundation would drop such a great application?

I wouldn't like to think that it is because of GMail and all the money that Google is injecting to Mozilla, but actually that is the only real reason I have been able to figure so far. So, please someone proof me wrong. I would sleep much better at night knowing that it was just a twisted idea that crossed my mind.
