Over the past few months, customers have been increasingly bringing up the topic of compliance and access certification, as it relates to dealing with stricter regulations and regulatory pressure related to Sarbanes Oxley, GLBA and BASEL. Compliance is definitely at the forefront of their needs, as well as improved access controls to pass their audits. Customers want the balance of having enough security and controls to meet their compliance needs, while at the same time allowing for their employees the ability to gain access to outside the firewall as needed to do their jobs. Certainly, companies want to avoid unfavorable situations in which employees have too much access, in cases like the City of San Francisco, where an employee allegedly held the network hostage.

On October 20, 2008, we launched our Sun Identity Compliance Manager, a simple and cost-effective solution to help customers better manage business and compliance risks, as well as the costs associated with certifying, auditing and reporting user access to data and applications.

In recent articles, industry analysts have shared their perspectives on our recent announcement.

"The new launch could mean that Sun may be on to a good thing. Regulatory compliance, both in the United States and worldwide, drives about 75 percent of the overall IAM market, which renders the market segment somewhat recession-proof." -- Sally Hudson, research director at IDC, Internetnews.com, Sun Pounces on Access Management, by Richard Adhikari, 10/20/08

“Sun had a product for this that was inside its Identity Manager product, but it was not really widely deployed... What they’re doing now is taking a better user experience with more context of access information -- who you are, how you relate to the organization, what you do, and what does this group mean. This makes the product more useful. -- Ian Glazer, senior analyst at Burton Group Inc., Dark Reading, Making ID Access Management More Accessible by Kelly Jackson Higgins, 10/20

"We're seeing a little more nuance and focus on how some things can be more digestible for the enterprise. Sun Microsystems Inc.'s new Identity Compliance Manager, which automates the process of certifying and auditing user access to data and applications, represents this trend," -- Ian Glazer, senior analyst at Burton Group Inc., Information Security/SearchSecurity.com (Tech Target), by Marcia Savage, 10/20
