Today Sun announced three new carrier-grade rackmount servers targeted at service providers and equipment providers, both of whom are increasingly relying on industry standard IT platforms rather than proprietary hardware platforms for running key telecom services and applications. The servers announced today include:

-The Netra X4250, a 2U (3.5-inch) system that supports two quad-core Intel Xeon L5408 processors (2.13GHz). The server also features 4 DIMM (dual in-line memory modules) slots and up to 16GB of memory and four SAS (serial-attached SCSI) drives that each support 146GB of data storage.

—The Netra X4450, a 4U (7-inch) server that supports four quad-core Intel Xeon E7338 (2.4GHz) processors. The system has 8 DIMM slots that can support up to 32GB of memory along with 8 SAS drives that each support up to 146GB of storage.

—The Netra T5540, a 4U system that supports two of Sun's UltraSPARC T2 Plus processors (1.2GHz). In addition, it support 32 DIMM slots, which at 4GB per gives 128GB memory with 8 SAS drives that each support 146GB of storage. The Sun Netra T5540 will eventually replace the older Netra 240 and 440 servers that used the UltraSPARC IIIi processor.

"These new Sun Netra servers are raising the bar in terms of datacenter efficiency and performance, while adding more choice to the broadest, most comprehensive line of carrier-grade servers in the industry,” said Mark Butler, Netra Systems Director. “Telco service providers can now leverage Sun's product innovation and partner support to consolidate and virtualize their datacenters, giving them new levels of performance they could not attain with competitive solutions.”

While many vendors ship NEBS-compliant machinery -Sun has always prided itself on the fact that its Netra lineup is NEBS-certified, which means Sun has done the testing and got the paperwork together that the telcos and service providers would have to pay to perform before they deployed the boxes in production.
