OMG... so many acronyms in SWI
Don’t miss the “V” for Vaau
Oh, my goodness. I’m still trying to navigate my way through an amazingly large amount of acronyms in our Software Infrastructure Business Unit (SWI BU) within Sun Software. I was just thinking about how my parents’ college education revolved around the periodic table of elements as former Chemical Engineers, and decided to make my own table of acronyms for SWI to help remind me that these acronyms symbolize very exciting things happening in Software.
I thought I’d try and draft something alphabetically by listing a few of which are at the top of my mind. Here’s an extremely conservative start – although unlike the periodic table of elements, whose symbols remain somewhat constant, this will take on a behavior I am really used to... change. Can you guess which stated acronym is an exception because it is not really an acronym (at least in SWI)?
ASP – Application Server Platform: According to a Forrester Wave on Application Server Platforms, we achieved a merit of a strong performer. Read more about our Sun Java System Application Server. Don't forget about all the cool things happening in the open source community with Project Glassfish.
BI – Business Integration (although you probably would think Business Intelligence): Our BI offering includes things like BAM, BPM, B2B to name a few.
BAM – Business Activity Monitoring
BPM – Business Process Manager
B2B – Business to Business
CAPS – Composite Applications Suite: Our Java CAPS Suite contains everything an enterprise needs to develop, deploy, manage, and monitor a SOA – see SOA below. You MUST check out this webcast to hear more about CAPS & SOA with Gartner’s Daryl Plummer and Sun’s Ross Altman.
ESB – Enterprise Service Bus: IMO, the stuff we’re doing in the open source community is pretty interesting. Kevin Schmidt has so much to say about OpenESB.
GRC – Governance, Risk & Compliance: We’ll be participating at Gartner’s Risk & Compliance Summit , March 3-5 in Chicago.
IDM – Identity Management: Did you know that Forrester named us “an identity powerhouse” and Gartner placed us in the "Leaders" quadrant based on completeness of vision and ability to execute in their Magic Quadrant of User Provisioning,2H07? We’re also doing some fun podcasts with RedMonk’s Cotė, the first of which ran here. You should subscribe to our Identity Buzz Podcast Series to learn more. Our Identity Management Products include: Identity Manager, Directory Server Enterprise Edition, Access Manager, and Federation Manager.
On another note, I is also in IEP (Intelligent Event Processor). It’s interesting how fraud can be detected based on a sequence of behaviors. IEPs are at the center of all this.
MDM – Master Data Management: Join us at the MDM Summit in San Francisco, March 30 - April 1 and learn about the business benefits of master data management.
SOA – Service Oriented Architecture: Current Analysis recently published its assessment of Service-Oriented Architecture Suites. We scored high across a number of key differentiators when compared with several other SOA platforms such as IBM, Oracle and SAP.
VAAU – I cheated. Although not an acronym, this is at the top of my mind because on February 15, 2008, we completed our acquisition of Vaau, Inc., a premier provider of Enterprise Role Management (ERM) – yet another acronym – and identity compliance solutions. Click here to learn more.
WAM – Web Access Management: Sun is in the Leaders quadrant in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Web Access, 2H07.
As you can see, there are many things at the top of my mind in SWI -- more so than just a number of acronyms.
Watch what happens!
