From the day late and dollar short files, comes this post about all that was CommunityOne. In case you missed the news, Sun announced the first commercial release of OpenSolaris. The feedback has been stupendous. In addition to making Solaris a truly modern and easy to get operating system there are a host of great new features. Like what? Glad you asked. How about:

  • ZFS as the default file systems
  • A GUI designed to make DTrace easy to use
  • An in kernel CIFS server for Windows integration

Still not impressed? Well try these on:

  • OpenSolaris installs of a live CD (yes, it's under 650MB of goodness)
  • OpenSolaris features a modern and graphical packaging system called IPS, which by the way contains a giant undo button for bad configs in the form of ZFS.
  • OpenSolaris sports network repositories for AMP stack components optimized for OpenSolaris brought to you by community members like you.

Oh, and one more thing: OpenSolaris features full production support from Sun, and you can even include OpenSolaris in your Solaris 10 support contract. As Homer would say: Sa-wish!

But wait there's more: Let's say you're not sure if you're not sure if you want to use OpenSolaris. Well, why not install it as a guest operating system on top of VirtualBox desktop virtualization software. That's possible, too, because the VirtualBox team shipped version 1.6 at CommunityOne. In case you haven't heard of VirtualBox, it's just about the coolest piece of open source virtualization software--turning most any laptop into a developer workstation capable of running just about any operating system on top of your existing desktop environment. Did I mention that it's free?

So, all in all, a very exciting week at CommunityOne and JavaOne, but don't take my word for it:

  • Read why the ZDNet believes that OpenSolaris is like Ubuntu for grown-ups
  • Peruse Phoronix musing that OpenSolaris gives Solaris a new face
  • Check out Tim Marsland blogging about VirtualBox and OpenSolaris
  • Read what the mastermind behind IPS, Stephen Hahn, thinks of OpenSolaris
