I was recently draw to a very funny presentation given by Todd Fast at JavaOne titled Applications for the Masses by the Masses: Why Engineers Are An Endangered Species. Among other things the piece examines the notion of the casual developer and how social computing has changed the way applications are developed and that engineers will not build applications but rather the platforms on which these applications will run. In other words software engineers will work lower in the stack.

Todd proposes that through a confluence of trends:
  • Software engineers will be an endangered species
  • High school and college students will take over their jobs
  • And engineers won't mind
In the coming months you can expect to see some things from Sun that echo this notion with tools and projects that transform the casual developer into the connected developer.
