Big Performance in a Small Package - The SPARC Enterprise M3000 Debuts
One of the great things about this system is that it has about twice the performance of the entry servers using UltraSparc-IIIi processors, but uses about half as much energy and space as previous systems.“We call it a start small, grow big system,” said Shannon Elwell, Director of Sparc Enterprise at Sun.
For Sun, this latest announcement represents part of an ongoing refresh of the server lineup. Earlier this month, Sun and Fujitsu offered new dual-socket systems based on the UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor, and Sun announced several new blade systems on Oct. 21 that included the UltraSPARC T2 chip and quad-core Advanced Micro Devices processors.
The Sparc Enterprise M3000 is available now and supports the Solaris 10 10/08 - an update due any day now. A base machine with the single processor, 4 GB of main memory, two 146 GB disks, a DVD drive, and a Solaris 10 license costs $15,000.
