Last September Sun and Microsoft announced that Sun was becoming a Windows Server OEM. Today, the two companies are expanding that collaboration, which means great portents for Sun x64 servers and storage systems, Java certification and ubiquity, and Sun xVM and Microsoft Hyper-V interoperability.

Today, Sun and Microsoft jointly announced the official opening of the Sun/Microsoft Interoperability Center on Microsoft's Redmond campus. Already these interoperability efforts are paying dividends in the form of the Sun Infrastructure Solution for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007--pre-tested system and storage configurations that enable up to 85% rack space, power and cooling savings. In the future, the Sun/Microsoft Interoperability Center will offer customers a vital resource for testing and running Microsoft applications on Sun x64 servers.

While undoubtedly a banner day for Sun systems and storage, today's announcement also promises a bright future for Sun software--as the Sun/Microsoft Interoperability Center will help promote full interoperability between Sun and Microsoft software in application areas such as virtualization, systems management, Java(TM) and identity. Specifically the interoperability center will encourage joint work to ensure cross platform server virtualization, including Windows Hyper-V and Sun xVM interoperability. It will help create the ability to certify Java EE and Java SE--including the JRE--with Microsoft operating environments. And it will encourage cross-company collaboration to ensure Sun Ray software provides a top-class virtual desktop for the Windows environment.
