Today, Sun announced new X64 systems powered by Quad Core AMD Opteron(TM) processor, further building out an innovative, power-efficient, high-performance product portfolio.

Last week Sun held a chalk talk for local Bay Area-based analysts to preview these new systems. Sun also set the context for this new product introduction, providing an overall update on the X64 Systems line of business, including a review of the longer-term X64 systems roadmap and key new SMB and new customer acquisition initiatives.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the conversation:
  • Sun is executing to plan, offering differentiated, industry-leading, award-winning products and a greatly expanded X64 systems portfolio.
  • We have recently expanded relationships with key strategic partners in the X64 market, providing customers with choice (Intel, AMD; Linux, Windows, Solaris)
  • Today, we're introducing new Quad-Core AMD Opteron(TM) ("Barcelona") chip-based systems, continuing to deliver on a rich and compelling roadmap that features innovative systems design and putting us on par with or ahead of our competitors on platform releases.
  • We're leveraging X64 CPU technologies through Solaris optimization.
  • Sun offers a full range of third-party OS/ISV support services, including valuable services that support Eco and HPC solutions and new service offerings for X64 customers.
  • We're growing and acquiring new X64 customers; Sun's innovative Try & Buy program has successfully attracted new customers.
  • We're expanding our sales coverage through DMR/volume channels.
  • We're targeting growth with our startup and SMB initiatives
  • We've taken advantage of a huge opportunity to break into new markets with MySQL and other open-source relationships.
