Yes. Sun sells – and has been for some time – to the SMB market. Not just for large enterprises, global corporations, governments or the national labs (we're there too, of course), Sun compute and storage systems could be powering the garage-based Web 20 business starting up in your very neighborhood, even as you're reading this.

You may be familiar with Sun's “Try and Buy” free trial program, launched in 2006? Here's how it works (as an example): Customer cruises our online store, spots an appealing server, thinks it might be neat to test it out. And they can. Free. For 60 days. And then, only after kicking the tires on it to ensure that it's definitely the IT they need, they can purchase it for anywhere from 25-45% off the regular price. In the past two years, Sun has shipped more than 8,500 free trial systems, 70 percent of those to SMBs.

Since its debut in 2006, more than 2,000 startups have also applied to the Sun Startup Essentials program, which helps eligible early-stage companies accelerate their development cycle by allowing them to purchase discounted Sun products and hosting services. Sun is in on the ground floor to help these customers build their businesses.

What makes today different?
Today Sun goes big with new offers and a streamlined buying experience for small and medium businesses. Today, we're offering more of the solutions our SMB customers are looking for: solutions for virtualization, web services, email and database management – solutions that we believe can help SMB customers increase productivity, reduce costs and grow their businesses.

With this initiative, we're giving SMB customers more access to great tech innovation that includes:

How do customers get the goods?
Sun is expanding its partnerships with online national resellers who sell primarily to SMB customers, for easy engagement, fast turnaround, rapid delivery and convenient financing. Sun's SMB-optimal Sun solutions are featured on www.sun.com/smb and can be purchased through featured online resellers, Sun Authorized Partners or the Sun.com store. During the initial phase of the initiative, Sun will be working with CDW as the featured online reseller. CDW delivers competitive pricing, quick sales quotes and shipping, complemented by personal service from a dedicated account team, technical planning, implementation, support services and financing options.

So. Why NOT test out that startup idea?
