Thin clients continue to be an increasingly critical part of any virtual client or VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) solution and their popularity has only continued to grow, fueled by compliance demands, as well as privacy and security regulations. Unfortunately, the increased manageability and reliability associated with server-based computing has historically required a sacrifice on the part of multimedia performance – that is, until now!
With yesterday’s release of Sun Ray Software 4 10/08, Sun has enhanced multimedia playback capabilities on the Sun Ray 2 family of clients for MPEG-4 (H.264) and Windows Media Video 9 (VC-1) streams using Windows Media Player on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Additionally, the new software includes expanded built-in VPN choices, enhanced security via remote hotdesk authentication, support for 30-inch monitors on the Sun Ray 2FS virtual display clients, in-session desktop resizing, service tags support and perpetual or subscription offerings. Also included in this announcement is the Sun Ray Connector for VMware Virtual Desktop Manager, which enables Sun Ray users to choose between the Sun Virtual Desktop Connector and VMware’s Virtual Desktop manager for their VDI deployments.

Because Sun Ray Software 4 10/08 decodes video streams on the client vs. on the Sun Ray server, these enhancements are ideal for corporate communications and training as they are able to take advantage of the Sun Ray hardware’s client-side processing power while conserving network resources and reducing bandwidth consumption.
