About this blog
I am Angad Singh. I have served as the Sun Campus Ambassador of JIIT University, Noida (India) from August 2007 to July 2008 and as a Campus Ambassador Tech Lead from July 2008 to July 2009. This was my sun blog. Here I jotted down all my random scribblings, reports on all activities I conducted as CA at my university, my little projects, hacks, geeky stuff and new technology I came across, all the way to things I learnt in my exciting journey with Sun..

JIIT Sun Club Inauguration + Code For Freedom Contest Workshop

On November 1st, 2007, we had the first event of our Sun Club in college. We had the Sun Code for Freedom Contest Workshop followed by the inauguration of the JIIT Sun Club. The Code for Freedom Contest Workshop was taken by Mr. Nitin Kapoor from NIIT. It was a 2.5 hour workshop. He first introduced everyone to the contest, and then talked in details on how to contribute specifically for OpenSolaris and Netbeans.

After the workshop got over, I gave a small 1 hour talk on the JIIT Sun Club showing a presentation I had prepared for the same. I gave the students an overview of the sun club, it's vision, benefits of joining, roles & responsibilities, tech talk/demo themes and topics, Sun Academic Initiative, other goodies that they will get (access to Sun Technology Lab and Digital Library on LAN), and our official website + mailing list. The response for the talk was positive. We distributed code for freedom contest handouts and feedback forms.

Although we had publicized the event well (posters, announcements, etc.), we got an audience of 68 students to attend the event, not quite up to the expectation. Never the less, we aim to make it a bit more participative and attractive next time (for e.g. asking questions in between the talks/workshops and giving prizes and giveaways) :)

The general feedback is that people want more in-depth talks/demos/workshops/tutorials about the various technologies involved in Code For Freedom contest and Sun's open source technologies. They want more workshops! One even asked for an on-site example of how to fix a bug. Rest assured guys, your feedback will be heard! We're going to do talks and hands-on workshops on Solaris and Netbeans. You will get to learn Solaris from ground-up to the extremely advanced topics.

Our website+mailing list was launched a week back. It will keep you all updated about latest news, achievements, let them take part in interesting discussions and find all kinds of info about the club. It is just a google group right now, but we've tried our best to make it as resourceful/informative as a regular website. Currently there are 61 members subscribed to the list. We'll soon move to an independent platform as and when need arises.
