First Campus Seminar
I presented he introductory seminar in college today. An audience of 100-120 turned up, including many faculty members.
I outlined the various benefits that students have from the SAI program. Many students, especially the 2nd year students showed interest in learning Java and implementing a project. (Of course the grand prize of an Ipod helped, too)
Here's a picture of the event:
Many had questions as to how they go about the activities, I've answered the queries below. Click to read the entire post
- To start off.. goto www.opensolaris.org and register.
- Join the Bangalore Open Solaris User Group (BOSUG) mailing list
- Send a mail to <ug-bosug-subscribe@opensolaris.org> with the
subject "subscribe" .. you will then receive a mail.. just reply to it
leaving the subject as it is. That should add you to the list.
From then on you'll receive all mails that are sent to ug-bosug@opensolaris.org. Your inbox may get cluttered, so do this:(I''m assuming you have a gmail account):
create a filter(on top of page) > subject :[ug-bosug] > Next step > archive it, set filter other.. ugbosug > ok > create filter.
On the mailing list feel free to ask any opensolaris related questions, issues you face during installation, etc.. - Head over to Java.net and register.
- Once registered, login to the site and go here and subscribe to the mailing list. You will receive a mail asking for confirmation, just reply to it with the body intact and you will join the JSS Java Mailing list.
- If you're on orkut, join jss-osug community.
Here's the presentation I used in the seminar..
If you want to take up a project (either on Java or Solaris), Submit your ideas to me by March 15th.(Just the ideas, dont worry too much about the coding, if you are good at C, there are a lot of resources online that will teach you Java. An example here : http://www.functionx.com/java/Lesson01.htm )
But first, you'll need the right tools. You'll have to install Solaris, Netbeans (for Java) and Sun Studio (for C). Copies of these software on DVD are with me, and you can collect these at the next meeting.
The next meet will probably be in the next week, and we'll conduct an installfest . We'll install Solaris Express on 20 PCs in the SUN Lab (lab 7, 2nd floor). If you have a laptop, bring it in during the meet and we'll install it. Look out for details on the notice board outside the Lab.
The learning connection site, which is the online web based training provided to SAI institutes is down currently, so I'll give the username and codes later.
If you guys have any more queries, just drop a comment below, and I'll get back to you. Leave your email ID in the appropriate field so you'll receive my reply.
