Sun Is Giving a Server for Free! Sun Microsystems is giving a high-end Sun Fire T2000 Server for free! If you like it, you can buy it, or just call Sun after 60 days and they will pick it up and you pay nothing. Isn't this great? Well, it would be better if this promotion is available to anyone, but it applies only to people living in certain countries (excluding Czech Republic though). Maybe your country is listed. Check it out here. — II 28 2006, 10:27:01 dop. CET Permalink Logitech Rulez I've got a new mouse! Since I am going to celebrate a nameday on the comming Wednesday, I got a gift from my girlfriend today (we sustain a tradition of giving gifts in advance, since we both love giving and getting gifts – much of this love is supported by our impatience, of course). It is a Logitech V500 Cordless Notebook Mouse. It's quite small and pretty and what I like the most is the absence of the classic mouse wheel.
Well, the wheel is not absent literally, it is just replaced by a scroll panel. It's a technology I have seen for the first time and Logitech calls it a "total reinvention of the traditional scroll wheel." I can only support that statement. It gives you more functions than a standard mouse wheel and looks really great, since there is nothing else than four arrows you stroke in the direction you want to scroll. I can't tell you where are the sensors and how it works, since I just don't know. There is just nothing that would tell you how it works. I love this kind of technology, which just works as you need and is perfectly usable. You can scroll vertically/horizontally (horizontal scrolling requires you to install the Logitech SetPoint software) and you can scroll to the end with just one stroke when you leave the finger on the arrow. It combines the best from mouse wheel and touchpad together. There is one more thing I am glad the mouse comes with. There is an expandable chassis, which can hold the USB receiver inside and turns off the mouse when folded flat to make the mouse even smaller and better for the travel. It also comes with a black bag to pack the mouse and protect it on the move. After Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 3100, this is my second Logitech input device and I must admit that it not only looks good but also works great. — II 21 2006, 01:22:21 dop. CET Permalink NetBeans 5.0 released!
Another major release of the NetBeans IDE was released on January 31, 2006. It finally comes with a high number of usability features you may have already seen in IntelliJ IDEA or in other IDEs. I must admit that NetBeans have a great Java editor now! What I like the most is refactoring and revamped CVS support. Enough talking. Go get it and enjoy the open-source and high-quality IDE! — II 02 2006, 06:19:25 odp. CET Permalink Win Big in Solaris 10 University Challenge Contest The winning team gets $5,000 (each individual) and a Sun Ultra 20 Workstation and the university gets $100,000 for Sun hardware orders. Isn't this a fantastic contest? I really encourage all of you, my fellow students, to participate in this competition. You only need to create a new or port some existing application for Solaris 10. I'm sure you have a great idea what to do, just register now, do the work and win the prize! Go to Solaris 10 University Challenge Contest for more info. You want to read these suggestions from Marc Hamilton to increase your chances of winning. Also make sure you are resident of the selected countries to be eligible to enter the contest. — I 29 2006, 06:08:08 dop. CET Permalink Comments [2] It's here: Sun's first notebook! You don't need to buy from Sun's competitors if you want to buy a notebook. Sun unveiled Sun Ultra 3 Mobile Workstation to satisfy the needs of developers looking for a mobile alternative to Sun Blade workstations. The notebook comes with 64-bit UltraSPARC processor, up to 2 GB RAM, 80 GB HDD, WiFi and 15"/17" TFT display. This is a nice try for Sun to explore the world of mobile computers. I hope we will see 64-bit AMD Opteron processor in the models to come – it would significantly ease the migration from Windows to JDS for a lot of mobile users. — VII 15 2005, 09:12:44 dop. CEST Permalink Comments [1] I Want to Buy Sun Ultra 20 Workstation, It's Fantastic!
Sun unveilled a new x64 workstation which outperforms any workstation in its class. See the key specs of Sun Ultra 20 Workstation:
All this and much more for a starting price of $859! After seeing the photos I realized I really want to buy it. But I live in the Czech Republic and Sun Ultra 20 Workstation is not available here. However, it should be comming soon to UK, which is in EU (no customs to pay) and not so far away (cheaper delivery). But it's worth waiting, see for yourself. Hurry, it comes with double memory for free until July 8, 2005! — VII 08 2005, 11:02:13 dop. CEST Permalink Comments [4] OpenSolaris logo says "open" in Czech first Yesterday was the opening day for the OpenSolaris project. Sun Microsystems has found a way to offer its premium Solaris Operating System to the public by founding the OpenSolaris project. OpenSolaris is an open source operating system based on a subset of the source code for the Solaris Operating System. If you follow the link, you might see the logo saying "open" in various languages. And the most interesting on it for me (as a Czech inhabitant) is that the first word "otevřený" is in Czech language. :-) See it for yourself, visit www.opensolaris.org. — VI 15 2005, 11:49:17 odp.
