Siga Siga

I spent the last two weeks of June on the Island of Crete and it was a wonderful holiday. I have seen Greece again (last time on Lefkada), and I'm sure I will remember it for a long time as I do with our first summer holiday on Lefkada two years ago.

See all photos from Crete

We stayed in the city of Rethymno, northern Crete, and made everyday trips to the south of Crete to see the beautiful small beaches with limpid water. Here is the list of things I will remember and gladly recommend to see:

  • Harri's

The best pancakes in town (and the best I have ever had). It is a must to order waffle with strawberries and whipped cream. I haven't seen so much fresh strawberries and such a thick cream on a huge, tasty waffle.

  • Pita Gyros with Tzatziki and Greek Salad

I had the Greek Salad almost every day and Pita Gyros is probably the best dinner I can imagine. I tried many traditional Greek dishes, all are great, but Pita Gyros will remain my favourite. You must order it on the corner of a small fast-food in the old town to get it, since it is not available in the taverna.

  • Loukoumades

If you fly to Heraklion, make sure you get in the centre and find a small, hidden cafe to get a fresh start with this traditional Greek dessert, accompanied with a Greek coffee or frappe, of course.

  • Playing beach volleyball in the beach club

There is a beach club near Rethymno which offers quality beach volleyball courts, a swimming pool and a music bar playing a selection of summer chillout.

  • Making friends

Lukas, brother of my girlfriend, lived in Rethymno for half a year and introduced us to his friends. Some were local Greeks, some were his fellow students in the University of Crete, but all of them are great people, very friendly and happy to meet us to play beach volleyball or drink in the evening while watching the World Cup. I will esp. remember the horrible ride on 400ccm motorbike going at least 120 kmph, thank you Tassos! ;-)

And what's in the headline? Siga siga means something like "slowly slowly" and is a typical Greek saying which describes the way they enjoy the life. I must admit that I completely identify with this approach and desperately miss it here in Prague. Well, sometimes. ;-)
