US Freedom of Speech Is No More
Yesterday's Oscar broadcast was not live. Actually, it was 5 seconds delayed. The US television network ABC has imposed the delay following criticism of Janet Jackson's live Super Bowl appearance. The broadcasting company is afraid what might come after Janet Jackson's breast exposure. Even though the delay was not commanded by US government, the delay is treated as a kind of censorship. Frank Pierson, the Oscar president, has attacked the five-second delay and is worried what can come in subsequent years. — II 24 2005, 02:53:10 dop. CET Permalink Comments [1]

Good grief! The time delays are not new, they have been used for years on live television shows. The networks have done this in the past not because of the U.S. FCC, but to prevent embarassment. The TV show Saturday Night Live has had the five second delay for years, as has most call-in radio shows. If Mr. Pierson truely supported free speech, he would not have restricted acceptance speeches to 30 seconds.
What a pious man Mr. Pierson is. He is trying to defect potential criticsm of is own censorship of award winners by accuing the network of criticism. Either he is totally devoid of reality, is totally consumed by his own arrogance, or thinks he can pull a fast one on the viewing public.
