Apart from the advantages of exposing a more personal face to the rest of the world, blogs.sun.com has facilitated better/more communication between Sun employees.

By creating such a disintermediated medium, it becomes much easier to obtain information about ongoing projects that we may be able to leverage, to help solve problems that some us may be having, create a more cohesive group transcending the organizational hierarchies under which we operate daily.

Not sure if that was one of the intended goals, but I can see its benefits already.
