LOTD #5: Blogging Gold for Sun - Forrester loves it!
A recent
report by Forrester Research published a list of 15 companies
that really get corporate blogging and produce blogs that are
informative, fascinating, and a joy to read even for people who aren’t
die-hard fans of the company. Here is what the report says about Sun
Microsystems:
Like Adobe, Sun allows
their employees to blog. They’ve been doing it for a long time, and
their blog portal has over 4,500 bloggers covering over 110,000 posts.
Some of their blogs, such as that of Web 2.0 and Web Services
Evangelist Arun Gupta, have become quite popular on their own. That’s
110,000 posts of promotional gold for Sun and they know it.
Here are recent statistics of blogs.sun.com:

That's a comment for each post! I'm happy that this blog contibutes
it's share.
All previous entries in this series are archived at LOTD.

Ajax World East 2008 - Day 2 Report
I delivered my Maki
as an Ajax Mashup Framework talk and the slides are available
here.
Lots of attendees came by afterwards and told me that they enjoyed the
demo. The talk showed how jMaki
Webtop provides a lightweight mashup framework that runs in
the browser. Here is a pictorial representation of the demo shown:

jMaki Webtop is basically a jMaki widget that can be embedded in a JSP
or PHP page. This widget provides the framework for managing widgets
and users, ability to persist the Webtop on client-side using Google
Gears or server-side using backend database, layouts and other
functionality. In JSP case, the widget uses JPA for performing all the
CRUD operations with the back-end MySQL database. The resulting WAR
file is deployed on GlassFish
(can be any other Servlet container as well). If you are interested in
a Java version of Webtop then the recommended path is:

There were several demos shown in the talk (using NetBeans and GlassFish)
and they are all accessible at the links mentiond below:
| Pros of Ajax | Cons of Ajax |
| No deployment required | Ajax apps are browser depdendent |
| 100+ Frameworks | 100+ Frameworks |
| Open Source, no need to purchase software license | Expensive due to long cycle, skilled developers demand top rate |
| JavaScript is an interpreted language, entire source code can be viewed using "View Source" | |
| Network communication speed is not optimizedf for Ajax requests |

Meet Agraj Mangal - Sun Campus Ambassador for Delhi University
![]() |
As mentioned
earlier, we have recruited a new student under
Sun
Campus Ambassador Program. Meet Agraj Mangal - a student of Masters of Computer Applications (equivalent to MS Computers but a 3 year program) from Delhi University. He has already started a blog - Kreativity Personified. If you are a student and would like to learn about Sun technologies then subscribe to his blog and have fun in the "quest of learning and sharing knowledge". |
I met him when I presented on GlassFish @ Delhi University last year. He was selected after an intensive interview process after that. I'm glad he got selected cause he certainly impressed me with the short interaction at the University. I think he is going to be a great ambassador for our technologies. As first "assignment" in his new role, all the students in the Computer Science Department are already using GlassFish and NetBeans for all their projects. So these students will already be GlassFish and NetBeans-enabled when they graduate.
Agraj has already started Java User Group and Open Solaris User Group in the University. Please feel free to bug him for any GlassFish and NetBeans related queries :) In order to help Agraj with his GlassFish quest, I'll create a "GlassFish For Schools" packet.
Read more about why Sun started Campus Ambassador program and other interesting details here.

FOSS.IN schedules now available - Almost 1600 registrants
FOSS.IN schedules are finally published, phew!
The conference is starting next Monday and this is living on the edge! This is the 7th year of the conference and I hope the scheduling is done little more in advance next year. This will allows us non-Bangaloreans to plan our activities around FOSS :)
I'll be giving "Packaging Java Applications for Ubuntu Platform" on Dec 4th, 4pm in A/120. See you there!
I'll publish the slides here after the talk.
Here are some other talks that I'd like to attend:
| Date | Topic | Time |
| 12/6, Thu | FOSS.IN inaguration | 10:00am-10:30am |
| 12/6, Thu | User to Hacker in 90 minutes: The Tools and Techniques needed to actually contribute to Open Source | 3:30pm-5:00pm |
| 12/7, Fri | The Virtuous Cycle: Sun's FOSS philosophy and strategy | 11:30am-1:00pm |
| 12/7, Fri | Hacking the Fox | 3:30pm-5:00pm |
I'd like to attend some talks on 12/8 but have to catch a flight in the afternoon. But otherwise the momentum is building pretty strong with almost 1600 registrants.
And then of course, you can find me around the GlassFish booth in the Expo.
Some more rant ...

I'll be attending FOSS.IN, Dec 4-8 in Silicon Valley of India (more popularly known as Bangalore). This is going to be my first formal conference in India so I am excited! Find me and talk anything about GlassFish.
Sun Microsystems has held open systems to be the cornerstone of its business philosophy since the beginning. Today, through shared technology innovation, Sun's continued commitment to Open Source is reflected in its leadership and key contributions to the many projects including GlassFish, OpenSolaris, OpenOffice.org, GNOME, Grid Engine, java.net, NetBeans, and Mozilla. And here as well, Sun is a Principal Sponsor of the event.
Here are some important links:
Where can you find Sun ?
Where can you find me ?
What can you do before the event ?
And of course, I'm looking forward to feast on Sambar/Dosa - one of the finest dishes in the whole world :)
I'll be there, will you ? Stay tuned for pictures from the event!

Sunday September 30, 2007
The first ever GlassFish Day, as part of Sun Tech Days, wrapped up last week. The event started with around approximately 60 attendees and a good part stayed all the way late in the day. The slides of all the sessions are available here and read a complete coverage of the event here. Ed Ort particularly talked to some of the attendees and captured the dialog as part of his report.
GlassFish is not only a fully open-source, production-quality and Java EE 5 compatible Application Server, it is also a community. And that's why Raffaele from Imola presented on "Imola JBI Binding components" as part of Open ESB story.
There were lot of attendees who came at the GlassFish Booth and were interested in finding out how to get started. Really it's very simple - Download, Use and Let us know. And this one image captures the distinguishing feature set of GlassFish V2:

The pictures below show how the attendees were involved and enjoyed the sessions.

The Rich Web Experience 2007 Trip Report

The first ever The Rich Web Experience 2007 just got over and I enjoyed participating in the conference.
This conference is part of No Fluff Just Stuff Symposium series and truly lived up to it's name and these are some of my reasons:
At the venue, we asked for Internet connectivity for the desktop machines to be used for demonstration.
![]() |
![]() |
For the quoted price ($850 for 2 days) I thought for a moment that we are getting a "really cheap" dedicated direct satellite connection. But then I realized it was just the usual broadband wired connection. Gosh! That was a ridiculous price so we finally used our laptop for all the demos as wireless connectivity was free, courtesy Rich Web Experience. |
It gives an impression that San Jose Fairmont is not convention-ready yet!
Both of Greg & Ludo's talks (Project jMaki - Enabling Web 2.0 Application Developers and Web Design for Server-Side Developers) were well attended.
|
|
![]() |
![]() |
| And so was Tom Ball's JavaFX: Evolution of the Java client. |
|
|
![]() |
We gave out a new tee-shirt at the conference with the juggling Duke and attendees were flocking towards it. And if you missed it then hopefully you can get it at an upcoming conference. Any guesses on the "balls" ? |
We also conducted daily raffles for a Sun Spot Java Development Kit during the first two days of the conference. The winners on both the days were extremely thrilled and came back the very next day and shared their experience. Congratulations!
| All the information about the kit can be found at sunspotworld.com. I recommend reading the FAQ that provides information on the types of sensors and other useful information. The Users Guide and other Documentation provide other useful information to get started. If you were not lucky to win the raffle, you can always buy them here! |
|
|
Here are some of the demos that we showed at the conference:
And others will be available on ajax.dev.java.net soon.
![]() |
It was really nice to meet Jason Lee - one of the first GlassFish Champion 2007 & GlassFish 2 TV Contest Winner. He got lucky at the conference again and won an iPhone on the second day dinner-time raffle. Read his RWE Day 1 and Day 2 experience. Jason, go buy a lottery ticket and you may be one of the four winners next time :) |
Jay Zimmerman announced that Rich Web Experience will visit Atlanta in April 2008 and back in San Jose in September 2008. Thank you for organizing a great conference and looking forward to our future participation.
