 A blog addict

I agree and now I can't deny it. I am a blog addict. I love to read blogs and love to write'em. So I created my personal blog site http://ezsaid.blogspot.com. I won't be able to write on blogs.sun.com/ashish but I can be found blabbering on ezsaid. Blogging represents democracy, don't let it die.

This friday is the day to move

I didn't want to use the word "last" in the title. This friday is going to be my day to move. My six years Visa with Sun is expiring. I appreciate the effort of everyone who wanted and tried hard to keep me in Sun and in US. But I guess legal and HR issues are too istringent and complex to by pass. I had applied for developer positions in the product engineering groups in Bangalore and came this close (twice) to getting hired. It didn't work out when I told them I wanted to come back to US after a year. No body could give me that commitment. My house is another reason why I could not leave for India. It has been in the market for few months and no offers yet and I just can't leave it here or sell for loss. So I have decided to take a course and lets hope for the best. One thing which will not change though is my love for this company. My dream of becoming the president of this company I guess will now have to wait ;-). I have worked on external portals for past few years and would really like to have a portal for ex-Sun employees. Sun for me is not just a company which paid me salary. It is a religion. What will happen to me if I am not on a Sun workstation? or not on Solaris? or not on SunONE stack? At my home I have two Sun WS, one Sunfire v100, and one laptop with Suse linux on it and the only Windows I have are on the walls. Becoming a Java consultant I guess I will have to be flexible. I have never worked on Windows and this is something which makes me a little nervous. But new things to learn and push to adopt Sun technology will be my future actions. I hope my blog is not deactivated. And before I start crying let me click the "Post" button. Quick!

 The imbalance of [.]

I was supposed to work from India when I was last there. I had to go to the Sun's office so I chose one of its' sales offices in New Delhi. There, one thing which I didn't miss was the fun people around me. I was looking for a place to stay for about a week. So over the lunch I asked one of the guys if he knew any. "Hmm you can stay in <hotel name> for about 6000/= Rs. or, over to <another hotel's name> for about 5000/= ish (a night). This is where all the Sun guys stay when they come to Delhi". For sure he was talking about the people who come to Delhi on sales trips. His confidence was telling me that the price per night was paid by Sun and not coming out of their own pockets. Afterall Rs 6000/= is close to $150. In US I have never ever paid more than $80 for a decently good room. So he asked me what was my budget? Uhh, 300-400ish? was my modest response. Nah you won't find nothing for 400 bucks here - He jumped on me. Oops I am sorry were you talking of dollars? - he tried to correct himself. I knew by then my face was red by either anger or just by embarrassment. But I was happy to see the return of dot-com sortta mentality which in US I was accidently part of. But I was sad too, coz not too long ago my manager had refused to send me to a Sun's internal class which was not even too costly. But anyway, I got a room for Rs 350/= a night not too far from the office. Everyday I used to smile at him thinking about the imbalance. Of? ... I don't know.

 Happy Independence day India!

Happy Independence day to India. I think she's been a good 59 year old nation, to the world's oldest civilization.

 ThinGuy's big red button

So at the end I decided to hit the Thinguy's Big red button and continued it till it enlightened me of what I was doing. It told me to be careful before making your perseverance your hopes. It can well be an annoyance on the other end.

 Good Ubuntu good

I am no geek. I didn't even do good in the geek test sent to me by one of my ex-colleagues. But I do have a bad habit of inserting strange CDs in the drive to install strange apps. One such CD I found was of Ubuntu - A new linux flavor in town. I had heard about it before when one my friends cousins' praised it. Not bad I tell you. Booted my Toshiba Tecra with a live CD and its good.
1. It recognized all my hardware devices, my video driver and also the network. I had some issues with
the network configuration with my Suse which I run on my laptop, but no problems with Ubuntu. Full marks!

2. Even with a CD the speed is not too bad.

3. I tried to listen some music from the shoutcast.com which failed to start in its' rhythmbox. Installed
Realplayer but it just hangs with no UI. Zero marks!

4. Attached my digital camera and boom it recognized it and imported all the pictures. Good stuff!

5. Java is not preinstalled - bad. Got jdk1.5.0 installed with no problems.

6. Installed the tomcat 5.x and I am live on the web.

7. And did I mention it is the best named linux flavor?
Overall I do give it a pretty decent marks.

 The old coloradon story

I am not the one who writes two blogs in a day but this has to be 'ged before I forget. There is an old coloradon story of two men. The first which had a gut feeling of finding a huge gold reserve in some part of the mountains. He invested a lot of money and bought all the machinaries needed. Took him months to bring the machines to the place he thought will have gold beneath it. Lots of sweat and unbelievable labor, when he started digging. Days passed by, months and months but nothing. People started calling him insane, laborours started leaving him. He got frustated. He was made to believe there was no gold there. He sold all his machines as scraps and left the place in dejection. BTW, the second guy was the one who bought the machines. Before he had to move the machines back to the ground and sell it, he wanted to give it a shot. He started digging and found the huge gold reserve just two feet under where the first guy had left it. The second guy became a millionaire. Now, what happened to the first guy? He heard the story of the huge gold reserve finding. No question about how he would have felt it. But he gathered himself and invested what he had left in other businesses. He ended up becoming a multi-millionaire himself a few years later. He attributed his success to the immense experience he gained in the mining business. If you believe you are right, don't give up just because the world thinks so. Just dig two feet more!

 Learn from the English team!

I hope the Indian cricket team is keeping tab on whats going on in Ashes. One absence of McGrath in Aussies', and English went on a kill. This is called the confidence. Not like the mighty Indian batting line up who couldn't produce nothing even in the absence of three core team players in the Lankan team. First match - Jayasurya with a broken arm snatches the victory, Second match - After being down 96-6, Lankans could steady the innings and snatch it again. Time is ripe for Rahul and his gang to go to the basics and learn something from the English folks!

 Why am I leaving Sun?

So my work Visa with Sun is expiring which cannot be renewed anymore. I have started looking for jobs outside and one question which is always thrown at me is : Why am I leaving Sun for working so long? Everytime it forces me to think why? If I had my greencard (US Permanent residency) and if my managers have to be believed I'd still be working for Sun. Performance, I guess is not a reason either. Above all I myself do not want to leave Sun in 100 years. This is my company. Sometimes I feel as if I am as responsible as my CEO or President is - foolish but true. I have been left alone and have to prove myself again to a series of unknown people, who will judge me based of if I knew say, EJBs or not. Hurting but it is the reality. I am so $#@!* at these insane rules. Scrap the United Nations if they could not provide global citizenship to its' people. I wish we build civilizations on other planets sooner, atleast the Earth is considered one nation then.

 40 goats and 20 cows

I just couldn't stop laughing at a CNN story of a guy in Nairobi, who offered Bill Clinton 40 goats and 20 cows for Chelsea's hands (for marriage ofcourse). Why did he get the impression of Clinton being from a farm at the first place? I don't think he knew that these many farm animals are not even allowed in the whole of New York city. And I guess this was too much of a dowry for Clintons to handle anyway. He is retired but thats a lot of milking to do.

 JES Search is pretty good

I am helping a team to integrate the JES search with one of the internal portals. I think I have a pretty decent feelings about the JES search, its pretty good. I wish I was given some task to write (or extend) the search APIs but seeing my limited time left, I don't think it would have made a lot of business sense though. But, I am kinda enjoying the integrator role. The way I think a search engine should work is what the JES has been implemented as. Even though I disagree with a few things like "keywords" not being a multi-valued attribute which I think it inherently is. I also would have liked some standard to be filed for the search engines to return data in some standard XML format like what we have for the EDIs (EDIFACT and USC). This will make any search engine, Ultraseek Verity, MSN or Google to return search results in some globally standard format. I also would have liked if JES search APIs would have provided a functionality to marshall the search results in form of an XML document (may be based on some XSchema). But it may be just me and how I think it should be, and may not be necessarily whats' best.

 ABCD of India

Quite of my friends wanted to know about India and what is the happening thing? So here is the ABCD of India :
[A]mitabh - Yes he is a phenomenon of his own. This Bollywood "super" star in early 80's
changed how the bollywood movies were made. @60+ He is still as funny and as young as it gets.

[B]ollywood - The worlds' best crap (mostly) producing institute. But if you leave your
brain out of the theatre, there is rarely a movie which is not worth your money. If you are tired,
feeling bored, would like to see some wry fun or just wanted to catch some nap.. Any Indian
theatre is the place. Obviously, it has produced some of the classics too but those 70's and 80's
are long past by.

[C]ricket - Oh yes! As you can call it - its the fifth major religion in India. In past few
decades India succeeded to win only one world cup (and reached the top four quite a few times) but
if you can find the real cricket fanatics, India is the place to see. Every single person would
know the remedy of the poor performance of the team, or how simply out of this world a player is.

[D]habas - These are the roadside eatery places. If you want to taste the authentic hot
Indian curries these food courts, mostly near the highways, are the places to eat. In most of them
you eat under a temporary shed and on some cheap dining tables or even on the benches, but the
food is simply the best.

 Hmm! Is that day near?

Mani's blog reminded me of my soon to be departure to India. My tenure in Sun IT and then the two and a half years with sun.com - the team responsible for most of the Sun's sites (including Sun, blogs and my baby devservices). These departments have tought me so many wonderful things. Great culture and simply great people to work with. Everyday, I go through the feeling as if I am separating from someone so close to my heart. Same feeling as when I first went to the hostel for my college. The process of selling my cute car, my house and my pool table. How easily the life swithced the gears. But hey! I am going back to India, near my family. In past six years, things for sure have changed for the better in India and I am looking forward to it. And I hope to keep writing insane stories though. World around me may change but not me.
