I was supposed to work from India when I was last there. I had to go to the Sun's office so I chose one of its' sales offices in New Delhi. There, one thing which I didn't miss was the fun people around me. I was looking for a place to stay for about a week. So over the lunch I asked one of the guys if he knew any. "Hmm you can stay in <hotel name> for about 6000/= Rs. or, over to <another hotel's name> for about 5000/= ish (a night). This is where all the Sun guys stay when they come to Delhi". For sure he was talking about the people who come to Delhi on sales trips. His confidence was telling me that the price per night was paid by Sun and not coming out of their own pockets. Afterall Rs 6000/= is close to $150. In US I have never ever paid more than $80 for a decently good room. So he asked me what was my budget? Uhh, 300-400ish? was my modest response. Nah you won't find nothing for 400 bucks here - He jumped on me. Oops I am sorry were you talking of dollars? - he tried to correct himself. I knew by then my face was red by either anger or just by embarrassment. But I was happy to see the return of dot-com sortta mentality which in US I was accidently part of. But I was sad too, coz not too long ago my manager had refused to send me to a Sun's internal class which was not even too costly. But anyway, I got a room for Rs 350/= a night not too far from the office. Everyday I used to smile at him thinking about the imbalance. Of? ... I don't know.
