Day 1 at Pune

I have been in Pune for evangelizing Sun's technologies via University Collaboration Program. Along with two senior members Vardhini, Jai Ram Singh and Sandeep, we decided to visit some leading engineering colleges in Pune. Today we visited Pune Institute of Computer Technology (PICT), Vishwakarma Institute of Technology (VIT) and Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering. Firstly, I must say that I am amazed at the level of knowledge these colleges have about IT industry and their enthusiasm to incorporate new technologies in their curriculum. Most of the colleges knew details about OpenSolaris, Java, SPARC architecture. We got very encouraging response from these colleges.

The crux of University Collaboration Program is to drive awareness about Sun's opensource technologies and increase adoption of these technologies. Today's students are tomorrow's developers and decision makers. We made our first impression by stating that we were from Sun's R&D centre and are not there to sell anything. Our aim is to educate the student community about latest and greatest open source technologies of Sun and to embrace the power of open source. Sun's 1000 strong engineering presence in India is there to back up academia.

After looking at Computer Science and IT engineering syllabus of Pune University, it occured to me that lots of Sun technologies go hand-in-hand with engineering courses. I could immediately state modules from OpenSolaris that could be taught under "Operating Systems" course or topics from OpenSPARC and Java which could be taught under "Advanced Computer Architecture" and "Object Oriented Programming". A complete courseware using Sun technologies can be found here.

After meeting with colleges and long discussions, we came back to our hotel. I decided to take my collegues on a tour of Ferguson College Road. We ate Sev Potato Dahi Puri (SPDP) at a famous joint Vaishali and headed for long walk on Jangali Maharaj Road. We ended up in having ice-creams at Naturals.
