Recreation of 'The Big Bang'

You have heard / seen from TV reports newspapers about the test started on 10th September 2008 by the US/European scientists to 'rediscover' the 'Big Bang Theory'.
Cosmologists say that that explosion of an object the size of a
small coin occurred about 13.7 billion years ago and led to formation
of stars, planets -- and eventually to life on earth. Now in this
current experiment, sub-atomic particles are smashed together
(colliding two beams of particles) at close to the speed of light;
thereby recreating the conditions that existed a fraction of a second
after the birth of the universe or Big Bang (formation of universe and
its origin; origin of life)... , shedding light on the building blocks
of life.
It took many years, it seems, to reach here - the experiment
stage. For example, the 27km-long tunnel which houses the Large Hadron
Collider (LHC) - the machine on the Swiss-French border is designed to
smash protons - took 14 years to construct. Some 10,000 scientists
from around the world have worked on this complex 9.5 billion dollar
apparatus since construction began in 1994. This is so the biggest and
most expensive scientific instrument ever built (see the attached
photo).
The gigantic item, weighing nearly 2000 tonnes, the equivalent of five jumbo jets, is housed in a vast cavern 100 metres below ground at the multinational centre, CERN, which lies across the Swiss-French border near Geneva.

In the LHC beams of protons are propelled through an 27
kilometer-long circular tunnel. More than 5,000 magnets lining the
tunnel will accelerate the hundreds of billions of tiny particles to
almost the speed of light, allowing them to complete one circuit in
one-11,000th of a second. There will be two beams going in opposite
directions, each packing as much energy as a car travelling at 100mph.
When they reach almost the speed of light, they will be smashed head on
into each other, breaking them into their constituent parts, including,
perhaps, the building blocks of the universe.....

This experiment is not about foundations of life but this is about the depth of physics and the discovery of Higgs particle. Higgs boson give things "mass" theoretically. So that is why all the physicists are exited
