Winchester (Solaris and Active Directory Interoperability) now live
The Winchester project (Schema mapping and ID mapping for AD Interoperability) is now live. We have an overview of the project in the Architecture page (work in progress). There will be more material posted in the coming weeks. Our mailing list is sparks-discuss [at] opensolaris [dot] org Please join us and contribute to the discussions.

Hi Dale, The functionality for complete AD interoperability is being integrated in parts (deliverable components) in the next release of Solaris. I am not aware of the release date. The GSSAPI functionality in Solaris LDAP name service and ability to perform self-authenticated lookups is in Alpha test phase. The login process enhancements will be integrated in couple of months. The ID mapping (SID <-> UID/GID) functionality will be in by Dec 2006. The nss_ad module will follow shortly after that. These are tentative dates and may change. As and when these functionality gets integrated you can test them out using Solaris Express.

Thanks for the update. Do you know if there are any plans on backporting any of this to Solaris 10? Unfortunately it is difficult to upgrade many of our servers to the newer versions until extreme regression testing of our custom applications occur on the newer OS releases, sometimes that can take up to a year to complete. Rarely is there ever an issue, but uptime is the name of the game in production.

The Sparks project will be intergrated into a Solaris 10 update. We haven't decided yet on Winchester and AD name service. This will depend on feasibility and customer demand.

As a Solaris & Windows shop, I hope that Winchester is made available on Sol 10. It's an Admin issue for us not having Solaris reference AD for user/group info.
