Late April 2007, SPARC Logical Domains (LDOMs) technology was released. The description on the LDOMs external webpage carries a very nice description of what these are:
Sun Microsystems' Logical Domains, or LDoms, technology is part of a suite
of methodologies for consolidation and resource management that includes Sun
Fire Dynamic System Domains and Solaris OS Containers, of which resource
control and operating system virtualization are a subset. This technology allows
you, the user, to allocate a system's various resources, such as memory, CPUs,
and devices, into logical groupings and create multiple, discrete systems, each
with their own operating system, resources, and identity within a single computer
system.
Installing the software is easy but takes a few steps that I'll describe here.
- First, get the software from the Sun Download Center
- Install Solaris 10 11/06 (update 3)
- Install the Solaris 10 patches that came with the LDOM package you downloaded
- Install the LDOMs capable firmware
- Install the LDOMs Manager software (pkgadd onto Solaris 10 11/06)
- reboot
The exact steps are described in much more detail on the LDOMs webpage on sun.com, and the Admin Guide. Also the Beginners Guide to LDOMs comes in very handy here.
Logical Domains' main architect is Ashley Saulsbury, who maintains a blog on LDOMs.
I ran the Early Access bits myself a few weeks ago, preparing a demo, and it's real cool stuff (not to mention it's easy top install and use as well)!
So: go and Virtualize the SPARC!
