Addressing "anything Sun", that is: anything I come across in my role as a Systems Practice Solutions Architect. Your mileage may vary ;-) Mousebits: Bart Muijzer's Blog

Monday Dec 31, 2007

2007 has been a great year for me, both personally and professionally. I won't bother you with the personal stuff. As far as work (SUN) goes: there are many, many things that I touched on, worked at, presented about... and there are even more new things that I learned about.

First of all: I work in a great team, the Systems Practice for SUN NL. This team has the wonderful combination of: being small (5 people), being challenged (by the amount of work and by the amount of different subjects that we need to advice on), being led by a manager who values individual initiatives, who guides from the sideline but is always there to help and advice, who trusts people in what they do, and who always challenges me to do better, more and the non-obvious( Thanks Sjaak!), being Open to the ever-changing world around us, and being outspoken (I love our team meetings :-)).

Then of course there's the increasing success of SUN worldwide. Not only because of our products, but  -I think- because of our vision and because we are executing on that vision. The Network is The Computer, it has been and it will be. The way I see it is that over the past years SUN has been creating the pieces of the puzzle (Solaris with ZFS, DTrace, Virtualization techniques; Identity Management; great support and learning Services) and now we've started to bring those pieces together in new products, new solutions, which we are using to make a difference. And we can, because the individual pieces do make a difference in their own right.

I love being part of a company that is on the (b)leading edge of technology. I love to evangelize what we do, why we do it and how we deliver on our vision. I love the extreme diverse types of Customers I get to talk to. I value the diversity of my daily job because I have the chance to do many different things: presenting, figuring out stuff in the lab, train people and get trained, travel...

One final aspect I wanted to touch on is this. Sun is an International company, which means that many of my collegues live and work outside the Netherlands. I get to work with an excellent set of people from Belgium (Stephane DeCoster, SunConnection Sales), the UK (Michale Haines, Duncan Hardie for Virtualization), the US (too many to mention, but Joost Pronk, PM for Virtualization is an important contact ;-)), Germany... One of the places where this Global Feeling  works out well is in the Operating Systems Ambassadors program that I am part of. Thanks guys, for the discussions and collaboration in 2007! Please don't blame me if you're not mentioned. There's no particular reason for that other than I wanted to keep this blog a bit short ;-)

Before I go into 2008, I wanted to make a final shameless plug. OpenSolaris and its associated User Groups (of which NLOSUG is one) are one of the things that will make SUN successful. As the host of NLOSUG I'll do my best to contribute to the thought of community building. Please watch www.nlosug.org... and hope to see you on one of our meetings!

Plans for 2008? Not really, as life at SUN has thought me that it's better not to plan :-) . However, I have set some "goals on the horizon" that I'll be working towards. They include: keeping up the good work, share, communicate and evangelize, focus, care for and take care of the people around me and last but not least: make sure to have some Fun@Sun !
Oh, and to blog a lot more regularly!

A very happy and healthy 2008 to all of you.
