Live from Debconf7: Haggis flashbacks
Life has a funny way of sometimes looping back on itself.
I arrived in Edinburgh this morning and since my hotel room wasnt
ready, I decided to head directly on over to Debconf. The event is
being held at Teviot, the student union at the University of Edinburgh
where I was a student many years ago. Given that today was the day of
the Day trip, half the attendees had headed off to an island off the
west coast of Scotland via a train, bus and ferry and the student
union was pretty empty. I headed up to "Hacklab 1" where Ive been
chatting with folks and answering email for the last several hours.
What I soon realized though after getting settled is that "Hacklab 1"
is usually referred to by its proper name, "the dining room" More
specifically it dawned on me that this is the exact room where I
attended the Edinburgh University Rugby Football Club's Burns night
supper over 21 years ago. In this room where I now blog I once drank
whiskey, stood while the haggis was piped in and listened to toasts and
poems by Scotland's most beloved poet.
As a toast to Rabbie, here is the poem of his that is always used to close out the evening:
|
Auld Lang Syne. |
||
|
For
auld lang syne, my dear, Should
auld acquaintance be forgot, And
surely ye'll be your pint-stowp, We
twa hae run about the braes, We
twa hae paidl'd in the burn And
there's a hand my trusty fiere, | ||
Pau for now...
