Promise Easy, Promise Apache

Tuesday Dec 13, 2005

Many promises. First we start with the promise that it is really easy to port efficiently, quickly tune, and deliver great results on the Sun UltraSPARC T1 servers. We already demonstrated this is on a wide variety of different applications. Our initial customers have found the very same to be true. Solaris 10 & SPARC is the same all across the product line. We like to keep things consistent, easy, and fast around these parts.

Secondly, I promised previously in World Record Web serving performance, we'd also share some peformance data on using the Apache Webserving software in addition to the Sun Java[TM] System Web Server performance.

One of the tests done internally was comparing Dell 1850's (3.6GHz) to the Sun Fire T1000 (1.0GHz). Because we knew that a single T1000 could do a lot more work than Dell we of course loaded it up even more. For fun and to show people that if they want more manageability this test used Solaris 10 Containers for Isolation & Management (not necessary to run well but it provides some more control if you "Type A's" desire). We found a Sun Fire T1000 (the Sun Fire T2000s 'little brother') could do over twice the workload even though the Dell was running at 1.5x more watts! power.

This is all detailed in Sun Blueprint Article on Apache Web Serving. I actually highly recommend browsing all of the articles in Sun Blueprints as a great way to improve you knowledge.

After reading the article and seeing the results, I am impressed :-) The three zone Apache performance is excellent. I am curious about single instance vs. shared zone performance. Do you have any benchmarks for single instance (non-zone) tests of Apache on a T1000 or T2000?
