Here there be...GNOMEs!

Ghee and I are giving a talk on "GNOME and the Enterprise User" at GUADEC in Kristiansand Norway. It looks like our abstract didn't make it into the GUADEC website. GUADEC is a great way for users, developers and troubleshooters of GNOME to share ideas.

As I write this there is quite good tin whistle music floating in to my back garden from the country market that is just over the back wall. Travelers occasionally try to attract people to the market by performing music. The tin whistle and fiddle player are quite good. Well now someone just started a chainsaw, and a house alarm went off again. So much for peace and quiet!

You should set up a second talk where you describe how Sun tuned GNOME's performance on Solaris. I don't know if you've tried the copy of GNOME from Blastwave (www.blastwave.org) but it must be two or three times slower out of the box! (I have very old systems, but still...) Surely this is not all due to the magic of the Sun compilers. Anyone?

Derek, Thank you for your suggestion. One of the more significant changes Sun made was to enable the use of MediaLib. We also used FORTE's optimization and defaulted preferences to values which are more performant and scalable. Some performance tips can be found here: http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/817-1740/6mhev3brn?a=view The blastwave GNOME appears to be 2.6. It surprises me that a GNOME 2.0 distribution is faster than 2.6, but perhaps the blastwave build wasn't built with good compiler options.

I will look into this but at the moment I know that our GNOME implementation was built with Sun ONE Studio 8 fully patched and on Solaris 8 for both Sparc and x86. My gut reaction is that you should be running GNOME 2.6 on a system with reasonable RAM and processor speed. We will all agree that we don't run Sparc 20 workstations anymore. I am running both GNOME 2.6 and KDE 3.2.1 from blastwave on an old Sun Ultra 2 and on a 400MHz pentium II HP Kayak workstation with reasonable joy. What are you running? You know...it is nice to see Blogs about Gnome 2.6 on Solaris (and even KDE 3.2.x on Solaris) than no blogs at all... What optimizations flags should be used when compiling apps for Sun Gnome?

These flags were used for GNOME 2.0 Solaris: -xO4 -xspace -xarch=v8a -xstrconst -Wl,-zignore
