Wither CBC? : General

As an avid (almost 7x24x365 since 1997) listener to CBC Radio on the web I've been troubled by the ongoing programming disruption. The problem stems from the August 15th, 2005 decision by the CBC to lockout their workers who are members of the Canadian Media Guild. CBC's lockout follows months of unfruitful negotiations with the CMG. The two sides could not be more divergent in their stances.

I have to confess I don't really understand the CBC's position and their public statements haven't been at all helpful in articulating their bargaining position or goals. You're going to have to do better than platitudes and bland vague "motherhood" appeals if you want any support for your position.

Unfortunatly, I can't totally agree with the CMG's stance either which seems to be to restore the iron rice bowl that has historically largely the been source of CBC's programming problems. It's also entirely out of step with the realities of today's work world. While it might be perfectly fine for CMG's stance to be in opposition to the working conditions of today's modern world the CMG position instead seems to be one of denial.

All of the CBC Radio networks have a terrible tendency towards ossification. As a long time CBC listener I feel that the structural changes at the CBC in the last few years have only served to improve the quality of the offering. Sure I would prefer if they had more funding for news, documentary and current affairs, but the quality and relevance of their general offering has generally been improving.

CBC Radio 2 (stereo) still needs a serious kick in the pants. Jurgen Goethe's "short term" replacement program "Disc Drive" has now had a run of over 20 years. The Radio 2 programming is not relevant and not interesting. Even "Brave New Waves" sucks now. It's been over twenty years since CBC Radio 2 was re-conceived and it's long overdue. Think multicultural. Think global audience. Think about more live music. Think about being the national voice for listener communities. If the result is interesting to those outside the listener communities, all the better.
