Installing Virtual Box and OpenSolaris

Hi all,

Today has been a very interesting day for me so far. I arrived at work about three hours ago, and I've already installed Virtual Box and Open Solaris on the new Mac I got yesterday.

I was easy to do, and I'm satisfied with the results. Here's how I did it:

  1. I went to http://www.virtualbox.org/, download Virtual Box. It was extremely easy. Be sure to download the manual when you do. It's in PDF format.
  2. Then I went to http://opensolaris.org and downloaded OpenSolaris. Also, very easy.
  3. Then I went about my business of installing JDK 6 and NetBeans.
I can't wait to try it all out. I'll keep you all informed of the results.

Cheers!

Comments:

Yesterday I had to learn that recent OpenSolaris build (b101a) already comes packed with latest JDK available via IPS and ready to go:

[kr@n428 15:25:50] ~> java -version
java version "1.6.0_10"
Java(TM) Platform, Standard Edition for Business (build 1.6.0_10-b33)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 11.0-b15, mixed mode)

They're fast. :>

I done the same thing. For some reason opensolaris seams sluggish. Ubunutu is snappy and barely feels virtualized. I found the same result on two different computers, both vista. One is a dual core with 2g of mem and the other is a quad with 4g. They all had the extra tools installed.

Hi James,

Cheers.
