January 2009 Update

Hi all,

I realize that I haven't been so active with my blogging this month, and this after I blogged 31 consecutive days in December (a record). There are reasons for this, but rather than list the reasons, I've decided to give a general update of what's happening with me:

  • Python Tutorial. I've been making progress on this. The first part will be finished soon. It's a temperature converter application that starts out simple. Then we add user input and validation. It demonstrates some neat features of the IDE while programming with Python.I hope you'll like it.
  • NetBeans Community Docs. The program is undergoing some changes. Varun Nischal, the Contribution Coordinator, has taken on an internship and is available to the program on a very limited basis. The new Coordinator, Kristian Rink, takes over on April 1. I'll be filling this role until then.
  • Restructuring. Sun is undergoing serious restructuring at the moment. Whole groups are being reassigned, and others will be taking on new tasks. We're still trying to figure out how cloud computing will have an impact on our work.
  • Layoffs. The first round of announced layoffs took place on January 22. I lost a lot of my colleagues, and I will miss some of them tremendously. Some key areas were affected, and I'm still trying to figure out how to go forward in these areas.
  • Personal stuff. My wife and I are expecting a child soon, and a lot of my free time is spent driving her to doctors, etc. The baby is officially due on March 12, but we have been told to be ready as early as February 25.
So, you can see that I have a lot on my plate at the moment. I'll try to blog more after everything settles down a bit.

Cheers!
