Registering Apache Tomcat in NetBeans 6.0

Hi all,

NetBeans 6.0 is an ever-changing IDE. Well, I guess most IDEs in development are. Just a few days ago, I wrote a blog entry about how to locate the user and password information for the Tomcat server. Now, it seems, there is an easier way of doing this in NetBeans 6.0. When you register the server in the IDE, you enter the username and password in the Add Server Instance dialog box. How do you get there? Just do the following:

  1. Make sure the focus is on the Services window.
  2. Right-click the Servers node and choose Add Server.
The Add Server Instance dialog box opens.

    I've downloaded Apache Tomcat 6.

I browse for the Tomcat installation folder. Then I enter the username and password I want.

Then I sit back and marvel at how easy and fast it was to do this. The Services window already shows Tomcat.

That's all there it to it. Of course, if you get stuck, you can always read the Help. ;-)

See you soon!

At least since NB 5.0 you just installed NetBeans, created a web app, built and deployed it and never even thought about registering Tomcat manually. Sorry to say but in this important respect the user experience in NB 6.0 is inferior to previous versions. Georg

I think georg is missing the point. Even in NetBeans 5.0, if you wanted to use a non-native Tomcat with the IDE, you still need to register it. I find this useful when I want to test my app in different version of the Tomcat server. Pretty important when I am trying to convince the Server Admin to upgrade the Tomcat server. Being able to prove that my application will run on the new release saves time. Now with NetBeans 6.0, it looks like the time to register multiple app servers has been dramatically shortened.

Hi James, great article! In Netbeans 6M10 I have a problem using servers I add after I create a project. The new servers seem to be available to new projects, but not existing projects. Any clue why?
