The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is one of the few known mammals to lay eggs. It is also one of the few mammals known to be venomous.
The fur of the chinchilla (genus Chinchilla) has more hairs per square inch than any other known mammal. On average, a chinchilla has 80 hairs per hair follicle.
The largest known marsupial in the world - up to 9 feet tall and weighing up to 200 pounds - is the red kangaroo (Macropus rufus). The smallest known marsupial - app. 4-5 grams on average - is the long-tailed planigale (Planigale ingrami).
