The first recorded bank robbery in American history occurred on March 19, 1831. In this robbery, Edward Smith made off with $245000 from City Bank in New York City. He was quickly caught, convicted, and sentenced to 5 years of hard labor at Sing Sing Prison.

The first recorded successful daylight peacetime bank robbery in American history occurred on February 13, 1866. In this robbery, the James Gang (led by Frank and Jesse James) made off with over $62000 from the Liberty Bank in Liberty, Missouri.

The first recorded peacetime train robbery in American history occurred on October 6, 1866. In this robbery, John and Simeon Reno made off with $13000 from an Ohio and Mississippi train in Jackson County, Indiana.
