Your definition is used mainly in philosophy. In IT, ontology is a set of expressions and relations to define a semantic for a given context. Real world is described so that a machine can understand it and decide what statement is true or false.

Ontology is mostly used in semantic web -- an initiative to describe a meaning or context of WWW pages.

See wikipedia.org for more information.

I provided the definition used in philosophy since it is the definition on which the IT definition is based. I went ahead and added an IT-oriented definition as well. Thanks, Petr.
