VisualGC for JDK 6

Now that JDK 6 is generally available, people have been asking about visualgc. It turns out that a change made during the development of this release deleted a jvmstat counter that visualgc was expecting to find (even though it didn't display its value). This was fixed internally some time ago but hasn't been pushed out until now. Earlier this week, we pushed a new maintenance release for jvmstat 3.0 which fixes this problem. The maintenance release is labeled as jvmstat 3.0 b07 and is considered a replacement for jvmstat 3.0 b04.

This maintenance release also fixes a few other problems. One problem was that visualgc would display a grey background grid, indicating a difference between reserved and committed space, when the target was running with -Xms == -Xmx. There was also a problem where certain graphs in the Graph window could monopolize the space in the frame and make other graphs difficult to read. Finally, there were some changes to the launching scripts and batch files to attempt to report better error message when encountering an installed JDK.

This jvmstat maintenance release can run on JDK 5.0 or later, but just as with build 04, it can monitor 1.4.1, 1.4.2, and 5.0 and now JDK 6 Java applications running on the HotSpot JVM from Sun.

This release is also now available in the NetBeans VisualGC Integration Module.

Speaking of JDK 6, how about those out of box performance numbers on server class machines! Hopefully, our ergonomics features will reduce your need to use visualgc!

Enjoy!
