OpenSolaris turns one year old this week, and you can expect to see a lot of activity both on blogs.sun.com and on the OpenSolaris blog roll (which includes the entire OpenSolaris community) as the community celebrates. Dan Price is also tracking the festivities on his blog.

In addition to a lot of back-end Roller work, the following user-facing changes were applied to blogs.sun.com today:
Global comment settings: It's now easy to turn on or off comments for all of your existing weblog entries. When you set the default comment settings on the Preferences->Settings page, you can ask that the new settings be applied to all of your existing comments.
Email display in comments: In response to feedback, we no longer display commenter email addresses on blog pages, but the addresses are still available to the blog owner(s) via the Create & Edit->Comments page.
Emoticons: We fixed a bug that was intermittently preventing smiley faces and other emoticons from displaying properly.

We applied a minor patch to blogs.sun.com today to alleviate the following issues:
ROL-1104: Missing jars required for planet: momentarily prevented us from adding Sun employees non-blogs.sun.com blogs to the Planets page
ROL-1108: Missing publication time: a semi-obscure bug that would only affect users who deleted an entry then published an entry in the same session.
ROL-1103: Unescaped content in RSS titles: momentarily caused RSS feeds to break with entries that contained an unescaped '&'

Tired of blogging? Try as you might, you just can't find your "authentic voice"? Maybe you just want or need to take a blogging break?
If you are a Roller blogger, rather than ending it all by hitting the "Remove Weblog" button on the Settings page beneath the spooky red "WARNING: ...NOT REVERSIBLE" message, why not take the less permanent path of deactivating your weblog?
You may not think so, but your blog may contain nuggets of information that some Googler or fellow blogger might find useful. By deactivating your blog, your content stays in place just as you left it (much to the joy of other bloggers who may be linking to your content). The only difference is your blog will no longer show up on the main bloggers page (blogs.sun.com in the case of Sun blogs).
To deactivate/reactive your blog, simply uncheck/check the following in the Roller Settings page: Weblog is active (and should be included in community listings)

With the release of the Java EE 5 Beta this week, you can expect to see a spike of blogging activity focused on Enterprise Java.

You might have noticed the preparations underway as blogs.sun.com filled up with entries about ZFS. The ZFS community has been gearing up for a good old fashioned blog carnival to celebrate a major event in file-system history, the release of the Zettabyte File System (ZFS). Everybody's been working up their best posts in the form of technical articles, stories of personal experience and even screencasts. And now the carnival is on!
