In the bleak mid-Autumn

Is it just me, or does anyone else in the northern hemisphere find it bizarre that here in Ireland, November 1st is considered to be the first day of winter, rather than December 1st? (Likewise, spring is considered to be February-April rather than March-May, etc.) Or is it just in the UK that summer includes August...?

I'd also say winter=Dec+Jan+Feb, spring=Mar+Apr+May, summer=Jun+Jul+Aug, autumn=Sep+Oct+Nov, never heard anything else. Well actually they don't even start on the first of the month, but on Dec 22, March 20, Jun 21, Sep 23, or so. These dates come from astronomical events (equinox and solstice), and I would assume that these definitions hold everywhere in the temperate climate zone... Are the seasons so much different in Ireland?
