What does it take to get your filesystem accepted as the 'de facto' standard in Linux? Guess this guy got annoyed at something, hopefully, not his coding abilities.

Don't like the unfavourable comments on wikipedia? Then simply edit them away. I bet this article

Phorm admits 'over zealous' editing of Wikipedia article | The Register

is the tip of the iceberg. Which leads to an interesting discusion as to the validity of information posted on blogs/web sets etc etc. Where is the peer review? (and that doesn't mean 'comments')

What was it Lewis Carrol said about words and their meanings? (Or was that Lep Zeplin "you know sometimes words have two meanings")
This is truely amazing....

Yes, countless scientific reports have been written that state the claim that Man's activities over the past 300 years are a major contributor to the rise in global warming. Interesting then that there is copious scientific research that has established that Earth's magnetic poles have (and are currently doing so) moved many times and will continue to do so. The effect of the the poles moving tends to have an effect on the climate too. Mind you, given that the next shift is due sometime around 3000-4000AD, perhaps it'll be a good idea to keep the home fires burning...

As Willard Duncan Vandiver said,
I'M FROM MISSOURI, YOU'VE GOT TO SHOW ME
and so it was with the ability to run a Solaris 8 2/04 flar on a T2000 (with LDOMS) in a branded container.

To make it even more interesting, the underlying filesystem as ZFS. And it actually worked.

So, to be clear, I took a flar from a running Solaris 8 system and loaded the flar on to the T2000's branded zone.

There are of course, a multitude of questions that will arise once one tries to move an application but the principle has been established.

For more information check out the page on  Solaris 8 Migration Assistant

(Fortunately, I did have the help of one or two knowledgable colleagues)

Yes ZFS is cool. But let's take a look at the FAQ and the first question. This concerns the naming of the technology and here's the bit that is just plain wrong ZFS FAQ Huh? Zeta is the last letter of the Greek Alpabet? NO It's the 6th letter; Omega is the last letter. Here's the complete table OpenSolaris for the Enterprising
Hey, but then Hollywood has produced a film called "My Big Fat GrΣΣk Wedding"... Er, that's grSSk. Oh, and as for the comment, it still claims in the FAQ that Zeta is the last letter even if 'Z' stands for 'zetabyte'.

Wow!

The latest incarnation of Solaris 10 now includes PostgreSQL

... and not a moment too soon! It's been a funny old ride for Postgres; staring life in UBB as ingres, shipping as part of SunOS 3.x (that's the earliest I remember!), going commerical as the company Ingres, being bought out by CA, spliting the world between Ingres and Postgres, CA open sourcing Ingres. Crikey! How come it doesn't dominate the world.

I'm, unfortunately, somewhat pedantic in nature. The observant amongst you will notice that the name of this blog has changed. All I can say is, read "Eat, Shoots and Leaves".

Hello Readers!

If you find this acataleptic, you're not alone. I'm an acapnotic, which I'm not sure helps; Bill , Clinton that is, is one too. (or is that in-hale?) There's something about being an acephalist that appeals :)

SGI once the darling of the visualisation world (gee, I forget how many times we lost deals involving graphics to SGI) has de-listed from the NYSE; it's now a penny stock.

One would be forgiven for thinking that Linux was the only open source/freely available OS....it's not, there's FreeBSD. Oh, and this...OpenSolaris Now, all those people who want the source of the kernel can choose the best.

Sometimes I do think that an awful lot of Linux advocates think that Gcc was written for them.. Strange, I was using Gcc to compile something called X11 back in 1987 on a Sun workstation... that's before Linux existed. OpenSolaris for the Enterprising
