Any facebook user will tell you that the application invite system is of limited use. Many applications force or encourage users to invite others to join. This causes people to send out invitations to people without regard as to whether they are interested. This also causes poor user experience as users waste time inviting others.

Recent changes will reduce the problem, assuming that they are enforced. Applications can now only force users to view the option to invite friends once. After skip or cancel has been done they can only display the dialog if the user chooses it to be done.

The ability to clear all application invites was also nice. Except they decided to not allow it until over a certain number of invites are recieved. This is annoying, as if I know I'm not interested in the invites I want them cleared now. However, I understand why this was done. One way people mainly learn about applications is through invites. If there was an option to clear all invites, many people would habitually use it and never read invites, which is not what facebook wants.

What is needed, is a setting where a certain number of "points' is required for you to see an application invite. There could be an option 'recommend' which adds one point for the application to all of your friends. There could be another, where you specifically invite the friends (a limited number), which could be worth 2 points. Finally there could be actions targeted at a specific friend, worth 4 points. So basically you would only see invites when lots of people were using and liking the application.
