17 Jun 2005 OpenSolaris Mascot?
Demand for an OpenSolaris mascot seems to be increasing. Here are two contenders.

This is Laris - a slender loris (loris gracilis) Unlike the mythical Slow-Loris, he is quite fast, slim and sharp eyed. He is nocturnal - works mostly at night like Solaris geeks hunting bugs.

History: few months ago we were looking for a cuddly creature for CDDL and Veena suggested the Loris. It sounds like So-Laris. When the thread to find a Mascot started on OpenSolaris-discus alias, he was introduced. While some thought he is cute and cuddly, some found him creepy and ugly. Initial drafts of Laris looked like a creature from the Mr.Bean cartoon series, with very thick lines and no shading)

Poll - the polar bear is strong, smart and cool. He loves to wear fashionable sun glasses. He lives in the Arctics, near to the north pole and loves to make friendship with penguins which live Antarctica, near south pole. Penguins do not mix with him much. (perhaps after this incident).

History: Polar bear with sun glasses was an early popular suggestions. Simon Phipps described his mental image and I put him down to SVG Bezier curves. Both the creatures were drawn on my Solaris 10 machines using Sodipodi and GIMP.

Note that these are just proposals that were floating around. The official mascot needs to be chosen by the community.
