Shashi Tharoor writes about a first-hand account of the Independence Day as witnessed by an young American woman Mildred Talbot. Mildred has noted some details of the occasion not written down by others. Her husband Phillips Talbot, correspondent for the Chicago Daily, wrote for the press.

There are mentions of a conch shell blown long and loud at the chiming of the clock at midnight in the assembly hall - something that is new to me. Her full writings could be an interesting piece of history to read. I hope Shashi might get her papers published.

Shashi Tharoor, Under-Secretary-General of UN, is a good columnist on The Hindu. There are three good reasons to buy the paper: its news photographs, editorial and Shashi Tharoor column.
