08 Jun 2005 How do you say Open in ...
I am trying to collect the words in various languages that mean "open" as in "open mind", "open heart" or "open source" (the adjective Open).

Here is my list so far:
French: libre (looks OK)
German: offen (Confirmed OK)
Italian: libero(Confirmed OK)
Portuguese: livre(Confirmed OK)
Spanish: libre (OK)
Esperanto: malferma (OK)
Swedish: öppen (OK)
Turkish: açık (Confirmed OK)
Greek: ανοικτό (Confirmed OK)
Russian: открытый (Confirmed OK)
Bulgarian: отворен (OK)
Finnish: avoin
Hebrew: פתוח (Confirmed OK)
Polish: otwarty
Czech Otevřený (Confirmed OK)
Hungarian: nyílt(Confirmed OK)
Most Indian languages: mu-ktha (OK)
Arabic: مفتوح (OK)
Korean: 열린 (OK)

I am looking for words that are used in more positive sense. Words that stand alone and do not sound funny when read alone. The Chinese word was suggested by Sin-Yaw Wang and the Japanese by my colleague Nakano.
I would be grateful if you can suggest me your language's word, if it isn't there above or if you have a better word in mind or any comments on the above list.

Update.1: added Greek to Polish.

Update.2: Thanks to murphee, corrected French. Thanks to Hamza Golyeri corrected Turkish. Thanks to Vladimír and Tomas from our Prague office for suggesting Czech word. Thanks to Achim from our Langen Office for validating the German word.

Update.3: Thanks to Janos, added Hungarian.

Update.4: Thanks to Alexander added Russian, Thanks to Prabha added Tamil. Thanks to Maria corrected the Greek word. Thanks to Rick corrected French and Spanish. Thanks to Cyril corrected Hebrew. Thanks to Madgy added Arabic word. Thanks to Ienup Sung added Korean.

Update 5. Now see www.opensolaris.org Sorry not all languages are there, We didnot have much time to do this, and it is better not to put up word rather than put something that would sound funny.

Update 6. Added Esperanto thanks to Paul.

Comments:

I was wondering about your french word "ouvrir"; ouvrir is a verb, like "to open"; the adjective would be something like "ouvert"; (Disclaimer: French is only my third language, so I can't tell if "ouvert" is the right translation for "open");

The Turkish word for adjective 'open' is actually 'açık' (or AÇIK). In Turkish the lowercase of letter 'I' (U+0049) is not 'i' (U+0069) but 'ı' (U+0131).

Hungarian: nyílt

While "Ouvert" is Ok, the French use "Libre" (free) when refering to OSS.

Esperanto: 'malferma', or the somewhat less commonly used 'aperta'.

How about adding the Kannada equivalent as well?

Your russian is not correct, as "otkryt" means "already opened". On the http://opensolaris.org/os/ there the variant "otkrytyj" is much more correct - means "opened" IMHO, I don't know Bulgarian, but, probabably "otvoren" also incorrect, the correct "otvoreno", but I'm not sure, as never leart this language, I only know russian (the language are very similiar) and have been to Bulgary 3 or 4 time :)

The Bulgarian "otvoren/отворен" is correct.
