Illustrated Guide to Installing Solaris on Laptops

Many people ask me how to go about installing Solaris on their laptops,
keeping their Windows software intact (since they paid for it)
I tried to take time-lapse photos
of the whole installation process on my Ferrari 4005 and make a movie.
That didn't come very well (and I looked like Charlie Chaplin juggling DVDs)
Anyway here is a quick illustration of the process;
The point is to tell that
installing Solaris is easy!
- as easy as you may install Windows or any of the Linux* distributions.
Burn CD or DVD and install - it will just work on most laptops,
Some gaps like wireless or battery status are filled by
frkit.
Just overcome your mental barrier and try it out!
This is just one common scenario for home PC or laptop users. Please refer to
Solaris Express Release and Installation Collection for more ways to install and complete details.

Hi, im trying to install sxde 9/07, but am having som issues.. When i boot from the dvd(which i created by burning the downloaded image), i get to the GRUB menu.. There, i select the option to install sxde. It clears the screen, sows copyright information and displays a menu with three options which i dont remember..
I select the first obvious one of installing sxde, and it shows me the same error message each time "ERROR: 'Solaris Express Developer Edition' can only be installed from DVD media. Either use DVD media or install by choosing the '$SOLARIS_EXPRESS' option from the GRUB menu.(contd.)", and exit to the shell
I reboot the comp and select the SOLARIS EXPRESS option from the GRUB menu. It again shows the copyright information and a menu with 6 options. I select the default option 'Solaris Interactive', and it gives the message "ERROR: Cannot find install software, exiting to shell", and quits to the shell.
I have tried this 5-6 times with the same result.. Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks in advance..

Hi Abhishek, I'm getting the exact same error message, although my system is supposed to be compatible according to the device detector.
Any luck on your side ?
Cheers,
Anders

Well Anders, i tried it a few hundred times, but to no avail.. luckily, i had already placed an order with sun for the sxde 9/07 dvd to be shipped to me.. hoping that will work, i have given p for the time being..
So basically, no luck :D

I actually managed to solve the "Either use DVD media or install" for both opensolaris AND nextraOS on my ASUS M2N-E by using an IDE DVD-RW drive. I tried a samsung AND an asus SATA DVDRW in the M2N-E motherboard and both gave that error. And they did NOT give that error in a P35 motherboard.
Chart (for open solaris b85 and nextraOS 1.0 b82):
P35 + SATA ASUS DVDRW = good
P35 + SATA Samsung DVDRW = untested
nForce5 + SATA ASUS DVDRW = error.
nForce5 + SATA Samsung DVDRW = error.
nForce5 + IDE Lite-On DVDRW = good
