先週の話になるが、福岡で Java セミナーを開催していた。
正直な話をすると、きっかけは不純だった。昨年末、とある飲み会の席で、浅海さんと「また、九州でラーメン食べたいですね。」「いいですね～」と 話をしていたら、そこに丸山先生が、「僕も混ぜてよ。」と割り込んできたのが発端だ。
最初は不純だったが次第に目を覚まされた。事前の根回しで福岡を訪れた際、かの地の開発者の方々にお会いして、ずいぶん身が引き締まる思いがした。 東京地域の開発者の方と遜色のないレベルの高さ(質問のレベルが高い!!)と、層の厚さ、なにより情報を得ることへの熱意を感じた。そういう人たちが期待している中に行くのであるから、相応のコンテンツをそろえる必要があると感じた。
最終的に、藤田一郎さんや、原田洋子さん、佐藤直生さんという豪華メンバーも加えて Agenda を構成したが、直前までは 別の不安があった。 私たちの知名度が福岡/九州でどの程度あるかわからなかったし、諸事情で公式サイトのオープンが開催一週間前まで できなかったので、集客に関して相当な心配をしていた。
ただ、ふたを開けてみれば、土日を*含む*たった三日間で300人以上が申し込むという殺到ぶり。 350人を超えたところで、募集は締め切ったが、当日訪れた人は申し込み人数以上にいたのではないか。 このイベント、Sun の九州支社や、Oracle 西部支社が仕事の領域を越えてバックアップしてくれたが、何より大きかったのは 地元企業のスポンサードと、ボランティアでプロモーション、運営を手伝ってくださった開発者の方々だ。 特に、走り回っていただいたボランティアの方々には本当に頭が下がる。
中には全国レベルでも有名な開発者の方もいたのに、黒子に徹して運営を支えてくださった。イベントの宣伝も効果的に行ってくれたし、当日の手際もよかった。 大枚を積んででプロを雇っても、こんなに効果的な動きはできないだろう。

そもそも、本当に面白いイベントというのは、無償で熱意と労力をふんだんに注いでくれるボランティアなしには成り立たない。 昨年11月に行った Java Festa in 札幌も、500人を越える人が集まり、大盛況だったが、 それも、地元の ITマスターたちが、献身的な努力を重ねてくれたおかげでの成功だ。 過去の JavaOne San Francisco で、面白かったことの一つに KVM 搭載 Palm があるが、あれも、無償で Sun のエンジニアが何人も徹夜で KVM のインストール作業を行ったおかげで、実施にこぎつけれた。(API の実装責任者のような大物もボランティア作業に加わっていたと聞く)
日本で行っている JavaNight (Night For Java Technology)も、もともとは、有志の自発的イベントだ。 最近でこそ、規模が大きくなり、スポンサーも不可欠になってしまったが、有志の献身的働きがなくてはあの taste は出せない。 だから、有志の関与が薄れた回は、造りものがどれだけ派手でもやはり面白さが半減していたと認識している。

ただ、ボランティアの熱意と方向は、計算できるものでもないし、誰かがコントロールできるものでもない。 だから、企業のビジネスとうまくかみ合えるかは実に微妙な問題だが、 Java をとりまくコミュニティは、それが可能な数少ない領域だと思っている。また、商売っ気がなさ過ぎるほどない Sun という会社は そのコミュニティと折り合っていける希少な企業の一つだろう。また、それが私がいまだ Sun に身を置く最大の理由でもある。
ともあれ、福岡(九州)の開発者の方々に感謝と尊敬の意を表します。

Today I got an invitation to a funny community in orkut:
Ishihara's forever

Although I can't understand any Portuguese word, it is fun to see the people who has the same family name as me in countries very far from the original place. I didn't know there are so many Ishihara-san outside of Japan.
Well, this family name is recently famous (or notorious?) because of the mayor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishiahra. When you google this name even with "java", you'll see some hits of this mayor:

Although he has no connection to Java at all, sometimes this mayor's statement on the web is next to some news about Java.

Anyhow, do you know the family name who has the greatest number in the world? By the following news site, it is "Zhang" (張).

This chinese name has 120M people in the world. Wow, it is almost same as a half population of US!! A Zhang in javasoft, when I told him this fact, said "Hmm, our family is too procreative."

wakhok univ. event

Seems like a man named Naoki Ishihara gonna be a moderator for a panel discussion at the event hosted by wakhok univ. The theme is university education in new epoch. The panelists are a co-chancellor of Univ. of Tokyo and the chancellor of wakhok Univ. Hmm... What a coincidence! The moderator guy has the same name as me. But I don't have any special knowledge about education. Like the most of japanese university students, I was a so lazy student and didn't learn anything at university except playing. So it shouldn't be me. I hope not.
What am I expected to do? Maybe the expectation is not for a moderator. I believe people need a disucssion about how university prevent to create lazy students like me. Gotcha! I should be there just as a bad example!!

Java Computing 2005 Spring (JC2005) 関連で、特定の少数者(コンテスト等)に進呈するプレゼントを今、考えている。 過去には、 Duke マウス なんぞが大人気を博したこともあった。 あと、Duke 携帯ストラップ、Duke ストレスボール、クリスタル Duke、Java ロゴ入り LAN ケーブル等を作ってきたが、やはりコンテスト優勝者にあげるものとすると、小粒だと思う。

Night For Java Technology の賞品は、Sun から Cobalt Qube や、Apple から iBook が出たことがあるが、やはりハードウェアが受けるのだろうか。もし、この Blog を読んでいる方がいれば、アイデアをぜひコメント欄に書き込んでいただきたい。採用されたアイデアを書いてくださった方には、なんらかのプレゼントをさしあげます。

Craig McClanahan は今回、JC2005 の基調講演の他にも、その前日に 丸山先生レクチャーシリーズに登場することも内定している。 同じ話を二回しても意味がないので、どうやって差別化しようかと彼と相談してきた。 とりあえず、下記のような差異化を図ることで意見が一致した。

Per request from my friend, I'm trying to blog in english with some french wordings.
Well, recently I found an interesting series of books. They are text books of foreign languages.

But they are really different than others. Very focusing on only couples like japanese girls and american guys in japan, japanese guys and philippine girls working in japan, french guys and japanese girls in france. They are nicely optimizing only on practical expression for approaching, quarrel, reconciliation and any other affairs boys and girls can have.
I bought French one, English one, and Philippine one and plan to buy Korean one. Even if you are not interested in these languages, I'm pretty sure you can enjoy to read them. You will see the difference of culture especially of couples.
For instance, in philippine culture, seems like guys need many romantic expression. Most of them sound even excessive:

"My life is perfect just because you are here."
(Kumplete na ang buhay ko pag nandito ka)

It is really interesting to me because we japanese guys never use such excess expression.
In french text, you'll find many excuse of guys when they dump their girlfriends:

- Sorry, I don't love you.
(Desole, je ne suis pas amoureux de toi)
- Do not expect me.
(On en reste la.)
- It is only for my health (to make #### with girls)
(C'etait pour l'hygiene)

Surprised to see french guys have such many and various expressions for excuse of dumping.
I couldn't stop reading these books. They're describing the real style of couples in these countries and I haven't seen such information and techniques from serious language text books at school.
Well, I have to bring these books to US next time and show them to my friends there, especially french speaking guys and have to confirm those kind of style is true or not.

今、 3月の Java イベントの関係で、US のスピーカーとやりとりをしているのだが、彼らの反応の早さには驚かされる。特に、基調講演スピーカーの Craig McClanahan は、半端ではない分量のメールを毎日受け取っているはずなのだが、毎日、ほぼ即答で返事をくれる。たまに読み飛ばすこともあるようだが、それほどたたないうちに必ず返事をくれる。どれほど高性能なメール処理能力をもっているのだか。 日本の知り合いを思い浮かべても、優秀な人ほどメールのレスポンスが早い、という相関関係は、有意な気がする。では、自分のメール返答時間はというと...お寒い限りだ。お、また Craig からのメールだ。

Sun の外向け Blog が始まって数ヶ月経つが、日本人 Employee の Blog もずいぶん 増えてきたようだ。世の中的にも Blog の存在感、情報流通の経路とてしての有効性が ますます高まってきているのを感じる。 アカウントをとっただけで、一切なにも書いてなかった会社の Blog サイトだが、 そろそろはじめようかと思う。 基本的には現実逃避の一手段なので、どれだけこまめに書けるかは疑問だが。
