Running Twice as Fast
Friday Dec 08, 2006
"A slow sort of country!" said the Queen. "Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!" - Lewis Caroll in "Through the Looking Glass"
Speaking of keeping up with the times - are you still using an older version of Sun's Application Server? Upgrade to the latest version!
If you're using Application Server Platform Edition (PE) 8.0 or 8.1, try out the free, open-source Application Server - Glassfish V1 - a stable, production-quality software, ready for development and deployment. Glassfish V2 with its hot, new features is under development, and talks for Glassfish V3 are already on.
Moving to Glassfish or Application Server 9 PE is easy:
1) Install the latest Sun Java System Application Server either in the same location as your earlier installation or in another location.
2) Run the Upgrade Tool utility that comes bundled with Application Server by choosing the Upgrade option in the installer or by running the asupgrade command on the command line. The Upgrade Tool transfers the configuration, deployed applications, and certificate database of your older version of Application Server. For a nice overview of the Upgrade process, read Prasad's blog. For more details and step-by-step instructions, refer the Upgrade guide.
3) Use the Migration Tool, if you have Java applications that do not deploy after the upgrade. Here's a write-up about this tool in Satish's blog, and detailed instructions are in the Migration guide. You can use this Migration tool to move your applications to the Sun Java System Application Server from other application servers like Weblogic or WebSphere.
