3D and Faux 3D

Simple Faux 3D effects are common in 2D graphics, however the quality and performance of such effects is limited. Eventually, I want to integrate a true 3D declarative scene graph API into F3. The goal isn't to provide a massively scalable 3D engine, but rather to make it easy to program smaller scale 3D effects with high performance.

In the meantime, since you can call Java from F3 it's possible to directly use GLJPanel in F3 and call JOGL API's directly to mix 2D and 3D effects.

Here's a simple example which contains a 2D rectangle, JButton, and JTextField together with the well-known Gears 3D example in the same F3 canvas:

It's also possible to do faux 3D in F3. Here's an example that was inspired by in part by the Flex Display Shelf and partly by the ITunes Movies page. Note ITunes is true 3D, however. The scrollbar and artwork mimic ITunes but the layout is similar to the Flex example.

Very nice Chris! The display shelf seems to slope the image the wrong way on 50% of them though :-( But I am nit-picking ;-)

Please share some of your thoughts regarding what the declarative 3d language might look like? Will it just be a seamless extension of F3 or will you have to add some fundamental primitives to the language?

It shouldn't require any language changes.

In the case of 2D I was able to more or less just use SVG directly to define the F3 API's. For 3D, the obvious candidates VRML and X3D aren't exactly what we want (they're more like interchange formats and are a little dated) .

In addition, we don't want the huge overhead of something like Java3D.

So hopefully, we'll be able to come up with a simple, lightweight scene graph that we render with JOGL and which can be integrated in a reasonable way with Java2D and Swing.

Hi Chris, F3 was demoed in Sun Tech Days 2007 here at Hyderabad. Heroes, F3 guitar Widget and F3Pad were among the demos. F3Pad was the most highlighted demo. I don't know the name of the presenter, but I felt a comparison with flash would have done the job.
